Price of Xiaomi’s “HongMi” Phone to be Lowered in China

Xiaomi’s already affordable “Hongmi” phone is about to become even cheaper.

According to the Taiwanese blog, Appappapps, Xiaomi has officially announced that it will lower its popular smartphone to 699 RMB, which is approximately 100 RMB less than the original. The price drop is expected to be implemented on January 7, 2014, and will initially be offered in China only. For the customers who’ve happened to have already ordered the smartphone online from the midnight of December 31st to 12:00 PM on January 3rd, 2014, Xiaomi will be providing a 100 RMB gift certificate as a form of “compensation,” appappapps notes.

Xiaomi’s price reduction strategy, when looked at from the marketing as well as business perspective, may not seem like a timely move given the existence of equally appealing low cost alternatives like the Moto g. However, the price drop is perceived to be indicative of a few major things to come from the Chinese company, namely the potential arrival of another much anticipated device— the “HongMi 2.”
