Foxconn, one of the world’s largest contract manufacturers, has announced a program aimed at developing the tablet version of Mozilla’s Firefox operating system, Taipei Times reported on Wednesday.
According to the report, the program will focus mainly on expanding the internet company’s open source operating platform, and is likely to attract various support from social networking companies. In an official statement, Foxconn stated also that it would hold training sessions, forums, and “application competitions,” and begin giving away free tablet devices as a means to “encourage” app developers to improve Firefox’s existing ecosystem.
Foxconn’s ambition to become more than just a contracted product manufacturer will likely grow stronger as opportunities in developing markets increase. Just days ago, Digitimes reported that the manufacturer will look to release an actual tablet product in the near future, and claimed that its operating system will be based entirely on Mozilla’s Firefox platform.
