Mediatek’s chip shipments are likely to grow by approximately 25 % in 2014 thanks to the expanding mid to low-end mobile industries and the increasing smartphone usage in China, according to various industry watchers.
As noted in a recent article from Big5, nearly 60% to 70% of the Chinese smartphone industry’s chip solutions are already provided by the Taiwanese chip manufacturer. This proportion is expected to grow even further as more and more Chinese smartphone makers set their targets on emerging markets and as their low-cost, “white box” devices gain proper traction within the industry. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC), the world’s largest independent semiconducting foundry, recently predicted that the mid to low ranged smartphone demand will rise by as much as 25% in 2014.
Mediatek’s smartphone SoC shipments already managed to reach an impressive 220 million units in 2013, which is up from 2012′s 110 million units. Looking at 2014, the Taiwanese company expects shipment numbers to rise by approximately 36% to 300 million units. (The numbers of chips shipped in the first quarter, though, is projected to drop slightly given the effects of the traditional off-peak quarter.)
