MediaTek Preparing 64 bit LTE chip to Counter Qualcomm in 2015

Qualcomm’s growing stature in the chip industry will unlikely be a major threat to Taiwanese SoC designer MediaTek as it prepares to launch a major 64 bit processor in the market: the MT6795.

The chip is currently expected to be released in the first quarter of 2015 following its official announcement in the fourth quarter, and may be targeted towards high-end smartphone devices belonging to the “premium” sector of the 4G market, according to renowned Weibo blogger and analyst, Pan Jiu Tang.

Judging by the specs leaked by the company’s “Smartphone Product Roadmap,” the MT6795 will feature both the ARM Cortex A17 and Cortex A7 structures, support 2560×1600 resolution and 4G LTE technology, and allow devices to play 4K @ 30FPS videos seamlessly thanks to its support of the H256 codec.

Pan believes that the overall performance of the MT6795 will not be as strong as Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810, but says that the former’s relatively early release will give it a slight advantage over the US chip maker’s 64-bit chip.
