Taiwan-based MediaTek Inc., a leading integrated circuit designer, announced Jan. 7 at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas that it has developed the world’s first 4K UHD smart TV chip MT5595, a system-on-chip (SoC) smart TV system solution equipped for the Android TV system. The Android TV smart television, combined with Google’s Android TV system and MediaTek’s chipset, allows users to watch movies on Google Play and entertainment shows and streamed videos online. Users can also play Android games on the 4K UHD screen.

All Android TV devices support Google Cast Ready and users can stream the content on their mobile devices wirelessly to the UHD TV screen. MediaTek and Google showcased the Android TV platform at the CES 2015. According to MediaTek, the company has already started mass production of MT5595 and many big name brands are participating in the Android TV program. The first Android TV with MT5595 is expected to hit the market in March this year.

Sources close to the company say MT5595 uses ARM’s big.LITTLE chip design architecture, including two ARM Cortex-A17 processor cores and two ARM Cortex-A7 cores, to achieve high efficiency and battery life. MT5595 is also the world’s first 4K UHD smart TV chip that supports Google’s VP9 and HEVC codecs, and the chip allows for 4Kx2K content streaming at 60 frames per second.
