According to the website of China’s State Intellectual Property Office, Xiaomi Inc. recently obtained a patent on its fingerprint sensor button and touch sensor. The obtainment of the patent means the next Xiaomi smartphone may come with fingerprint recognition feature. Meanwhile, Xiaomi’s Mi5 is expected to be unveiled in December this year.

Compared to their predecessors, the Mi4 and Xiaomi Note were not too different specifications-wise. Xiaomi’s addition of several mid-range smartphones to its lineup had some users worrying if the brand would slow down the specs upgrade in its upcoming phones. Sources familiar with the issue said Xiaomi’s Mi5 will return to the brand’s product concept of “Born for Fever” and will come with big specs upgrade. The Mi5 will reportedly feature Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 processor, a 5.2-inch 2K display, 4GB of RAM and a 16MP back camera with optical image stabilization (OIS) technology.

The latest patent obtained by Xiaomi suggested that the Mi5 will possibly feature fingerprint recognition function. The patent documents showed that the fingerprint sensor technology will be incorporated into the main button under the cover glass for aesthetics and durability.
