LINE Corporation Posts an Impressive First Quarter Revenue of JPY 28.1 Billion

5 May

On April 30, LINE Corporation, the owner of the instant communication app LINE, announced their worldwide earnings for the first quarter of this year (January – March). According to their report, the quarter’s revenue was JPY 28.1 billion (or TWD 7.3 billion), a 9% increase over the prior month and a 78% year-on-year growth. Additionally, LINE’s monthly active users reached 205 million.

The first quarter fiscal report shows that the company’s core business, the LINE app, brought in JPY 2.54 billion JPY (or TWD 6.6 billion) in revenue worldwide, representing 90% of the company’s total global earnings. Compared with the previous quarter, the LINE app saw a 9% revenue increase. More impressively, the app had a 76% year-on-year revenue growth.

Among the 205 million monthly active users of LINE, 60% or around 123 million are from the app’s top four countries in terms of market share: Japan, Taiwan, Thailand and Indonesia. Indonesia especially saw the fastest growth in both new and active users.

Virtual stickers, games and advertisement are the three major revenue sources of LINE Corporation. Presently, stickers released by the company are enjoying strong sales in various countries. Moreover, LINE stickers with sound effects have been especially sought-after since their launch earlier this year (available in Taiwan by the end of April). LINE Creators Market, a platform that lets users sell stickers they have created, is celebrating its anniversary this May with more than 10,000 sets of original stickers available.

LINE Corporation revealed its strategy going forward at the LINE 2015 Taipei Conference in February of this year. Officially known as “Mobile Gateway”, this game plan involves the aggressive promotion of eight major service apps that will make LINE an important platform in people’s lives. They are LINE Pay (a mobile payment platform), LINE Taxi (a cab-hailing service), LINE Mart (an e-commerce app), LINE@ (promotional accounts for business and individuals), LINE TV (a video streaming app), LINE Manga (an app for downloading Japanese comics), LINE Webtoon (another mobile comics app for works by amateur artists),
