Huawei Technologies Co. launched a smaller and less expensive version of its P8 flagship smartphone in Taiwan Tuesday, in an effort to compete with similar handsets from rivals Sony Mobile and HTC Corp.

The P8 Lite will be available from June 15 with a price tag of NT$7,990. The new Huawei handset is considerably cheaper than Sony Mobile’s Xperia C4, which costs NT$10,900, and HTC’s Desire 826, which retails for NT$9,990.

In addition to its attractive price tag, the P8 Lite lives up to its name: The phone is just 7.7 millimeters thick and weighs 131 grams. Its hardware specs include the following: a 5-inch screen with 1280 x 720 pixels, an octa-core 1.2GHz mobile processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage capacity, a 13-megapixel rear camera and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera designed for taking razor-sharp selfies.

Telecom network giant Huawei was the world’s No. 4 smartphone vendor by shipments in 2014. Shenzhen-based Huawei shipped 68 million handsets last year, giving it a 5.5 market share, according to research firm Gartner.

Huawei is targeting shipments of 100 million smartphone units this year, with premium models comprising 30 percent of the total, according to Taiwan’s Central News Agency.
