Six Units of Luxury Apple Watch Sold on Launch Day

The luxury version of Apple Inc.’s smartwatch recoded sales of six units Friday, the day of its launch in Taiwan, Taiwan’s Central News Agency reported.

The premium Apple Watch Edition, crafted from custom rose or yellow 18-karat gold, is available only at the Studio A store in the Taipei 101 mall and is priced at from NT$340,000 to NT$570,000.

Because limited supply, all Apple Watch units at the Taipei 101 A Studio were sold out within one hour of going on sale.

Apple’s foray into the smartwatch market was launched in Taiwan at a starting price of NT$11,500 (US$371) for the plastic Apple Watch Sport and NT$17,900 for the steel-cased Apple Watch.

The Apple Watch went on sale at 11 a.m. Friday at 10 select Apple-authorized resellers in Taipei, New Taipei, Taichung and Kaohsiung. About 1,000 units of the smartwatch were initially available, according to the Central News Agency.

A consumer surnamed Hsieh, who was the first buyer of an Apple Watch at the Taipei 101 store, told the Central News Agency he began to queue up at 6:40 a.m.

Calling himself a long-time Apple fan, Hsieh said he owns an iPhone, iPad and a Mac and “certainly did not want to miss Apple’s first smartwatch.”
