Line Launches A Lighter Version Of Its IM App In India and Ten Other Emerging Markets

Popular messaging and calling app LINE has today introduced a lighter, lesser than 1 MB version of its app known as LINE Lite in eleven countries. The new lite version would occupy lesser storage, will demand the least system resources, and would continue to provide LINE’s trademark Sticker and emoticon messaging.

This will enable the users having the most basic smartphones to access the app, even with the most unstable internet connections. Initially, features such as calling and Timeline are not provided in Lite version but they would be included in the upcoming versions of the app. However, the popular emoticons and stickers in addition to core text and image best messaging continue to be an important part of the Lite version as well.

LINE, which is often perceived as a more funky and trendy alternative to WhatsApp with its attractive emoticons and stickers, has about 205million users monthly in 230 countries and regions around the world (as of April 2015). However,over half of those users hail from just three countries — Japan, Thailand and Taiwan — adding to LINE’s failures of projecting itself as a global IM app.

Moreover, it is nowhere near to WhatsApp, which reported a whopping 800 million active users per month globally in April 2015, with its popularity continuing to surge.

LINE’s biggest disadvantage, as per user reviews and feedback, has been its large size and excessive use of phone system resources making it less attractive to users looking for a simple chatting app. With Lite version though, LINE aims to change that image.

According to a research by Business Insider in March 2015, for the first time, the top four messaging apps reached a user base equal to that of top four social networks. WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, WeChat, and Viber reported 2.125 billion monthly active users globally (users who accessed the apps at least once in a 30-day period) against 2.125 billion users of Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram combined.

Line is one of the front runners among the other lesser known messaging apps and with its Lite version focused on users and areas with less system resources, it is now expecting to rectify the shortcoming of its original app as well as gain access to more users all over the world.


Line LITE will be launched in countries such as Algeria, Cambodia, Colombia, Egypt, India, Mexico, Pakistan, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Korea, and Vietnam and more regions will be included depending on the success and user response in these countries.
