Launch of Xiaomi Mi5 This Year Depends on Qualcomm

The much-anticipated Xiaomi Mi5 smartphone could debut this year provided Qualcomm does not delay the release of its Snapdragon 820 chip, Tech Times reported Monday.

While numerous flagship handsets equipped with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor have launched this year, overheating issues tied to the chip have raised significant concern. For instance, Samsung chose not to equip its high-end handsets with the Snapdragon 810 because of the overheating problem, market insiders say.

The forthcoming 820 chip should resolve the problems of its predecessor while featuring greater power, experts say.

Earlier this year, industry analyst Pan Jiutang predicted that the Xiaomi Mi5 would be the first smartphone to be equipped with the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 820. Pan forecast that Qualcomm would deliver its newest chip to manufacturers in December 2015 and the first devices to pack the chip would hit the market in March 2016. Recently, however, Pan revised his forecast, emphasizing that Xiaomi could release its new Mi5 flagship as early as December if Qualcomm delivers the Snapdragon 820 fast enough.

According to Tech Times, Xiomi’s Mi5 should have launched already, based on its typical smartphone launch cycle – it has been a year since the Mi4 hit the market – but is waiting on Qualcomm’s new processor.

The upcoming Xiaomi Mi5 is expected to boast first-rate specs all around, competing at the premium segment of the smartphone market. According to a Weibo post from LeaksFly, the device will have a 5.2-inch full HD screen (1920 x 1080 pixels), the aforementioned Snapdragon 820 chipset under the hood, an Adreno 530 graphics processing unit (GPU) and 4GB of RAM.
