Foxconn on July 26 announced the initiation of its “Flying Eagle Project” in North America and a US$10 billion investment to build a Gen-10.5 LCD panel fab in Wisconsin. According to WitsView, a division of TrendForce, this proposed plant will be mainly producing panels of 8K resolution. Display technologies behind 8K resolution are well developed and have existed for a while. (more…)

U.S.-Japanese Consortium Announced as the Front Runner in the Bid for Toshiba’s Memory Business; TrendForce Says Such Deal Will Add Pressure on Samsung in NAND Flash Market

Toshiba on June 21 announced that it has chosen a consortium led by U.S.-based Bain Capital and investors backed by the Japanese government as the first-place bidder for the spin-off of the company’s memory business. The deal is set to be finalized on June 28 and completed by March of next year. According to DRAMeXchange, a division of TrendForce, this announcement in the short term could cause the NAND Flash market to start shifting from undersupply to equilibrium this fourth quarter. In the long run, the support and demand provided by the bidding party could help the spun-off memory business to become more competitive against Samsung in terms of NAND Flash production capacity and related technology. Voice-Based Assistant Robots Made Up Nearly 50% of Service Robot Sales Worldwide in 2016 Owing to Advances in AI, Says TrendForce

Rapid progress in the development artificial intelligence (AI) has allowed humans to communicate with robots using natural languages. TrendForce’s breakdown of global sales of service robots for 2016 reveals that voice-based assistant robots accounted for the majority share of the total sales at nearly 50%. Robot vacuum cleaners made up the second-largest share of total service robot sales at nearly 40%. This finding and other data can be found in TrendForce’s latest report on the robotics industry. TrendForce Reports Competition from Chinese Brands Lowered Prices of LED Light Bulbs in the U.S. and Europe During March

Prices of LED replacement light bulbs continued to fall this March, according to the latest report from LEDinside, a division of TrendForce. Compared with February, the global average sales price (ASP) of 40-watt equivalent LED light bulbs dropped 3.6% to US$6.6, while the global ASP of 60-watt equivalent products had a smaller decline of 0.9% and came to US$8.1.
