HCL Technologies and Sumeru Equity Partners to Acquire Actian Corporation

HCL Technologies (HCL) and Sumeru Equity Partners (SEP), a technology and growth-focused private equity firm, have signed a definitive agreement to acquire Actian Corporation. The all-cash deal is valued at US$330 million. HCL will own 80 percent while SEP will own approximately 20 percent stake of the JV entity which in turn will own 100% shareholding of Actian Corporation. (more…)

Breakthrough Discovered By UT Dallas Team Expected to Increase Life and Charging Cycles of Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

A major breakthrough in the development of lithium-sulfur batteries appears to be imminent. Compared with the current rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, lithium-sulfur batteries theoretically have energy density that is around three to five times higher (i.e. capable of reaching 2,600 watt-hours per kilogram). If this next-generation battery technology is successfully commercialized, then battery life of smartphones in operation could be extended from the usual three hours to around nine or even 15 hours. In Germany, Levelized Cost of PV Energy per kWh is Only NT $1.33, the Lowest among Different Energy Categories

Fraunhofer ISE, an Applied Science Research Institute in Germany, has recently pointed out that among all of the energy sources in Germany, solar energy is the most cost-effective. The levelized cost of PV power per kWh in the country is currently at 0.0371 ~ 0.1154 Euro. The lowest cost is equivalent to NT $1.33. (more…)

Alibaba Group Holding Limited (NYSE: BABA, “Alibaba”) has announced that the company will acquire all outstanding shares that it does not already own in Ele.me, a leading online delivery and local services platform in China, in a transaction that implies the enterprise value of Ele.me at US$9.5 billion. Alibaba and its affiliate Ant Small and Micro Financial Services Group Co., Ltd. currently own approximately 43% of the outstanding voting shares of Ele.me. (more…)

Nitrogen Supply Issue at Micron Memory Taiwan May Further Aggravate the Tight Supply Situation of DRAM in 2Q18, Says TrendForce

The average and the highest contract price of mainstream DDR4 4GB modules are still at US$33 and US$34 respectively in March, according to DRAMeXchange, a division of TrendForce. On the whole, contract prices of PC DRAM have seen an average increase of around 5% in 1Q18 compared with 4Q17. Nitrogen supply issue at Micron Memory Taiwan may prolong current tight supply in DRAM market, and is expected to push up contract prices of PC DRAM by 3% in 2Q18 compared with 1Q18. (more…)
