Can Chinese LED Makers Change Rules of Patent Market in the Post Oligopoly Era?

For a long time, Nichia, Osram Opto., Cree, Toyota Gosei and Lumileds have jointly shaped an enormous and powerful patent shield with cross-license agreements within the world LED industry and the five lighting goliaths have been charging, more or less, whoever tried to sell LED products abroad. However, as those patents are about to expire, Taiwan- and Korea-based Companies rise with their new patents and the expansion of Chinese businesses is posing threats, the industry is slowly transitioning away from the old oligopoly. TrendForce Says ‘Micro LED-Like’ Products Will Be Available in 2018; Breakthroughs in Mass Transfer Have Yet to Materialize

Nichia Remained Revenue Leader in China’s LED Package Market for 2016, Says LEDinside

Steady growth in the LED lighting market supported the capacity expansion efforts of LED chip and package industries in 2016, says LEDinside, a division of TrendForce. Furthermore, the annual revenue of China’s LED package market grew by 6% for 2016 to reach US$8.9 billion, according to LEDinside’s 2017 Chinese LED Chip and Package Industry Report. In terms of ranking by revenue market share, Nichia retained its first place position in the Chinese market for 2016, while MLS climbed to second place and Lumileds dropped to third place.

Global ASPs of LED Light Bulbs Rose Slightly in June Due to Arrival of Pricier Smart Lighting Products, TrendForce Reports

Prices of LED light bulbs crept up slightly this June with the global ASP of 40-watt equivalent products rising by 1.1% compared with the prior month to US$6.6, according to the latest report from LEDinside, a division of TrendForce.
