Alcatel, T-Mobile launch affordable LTE smartphone POP Astro in U.S.

Alcatel OneTouch, a brand belonging to China’s TCL Communication, is partnering with U.S. carrier T-Mobile to introduce their most affordable LTE smartphone, POP Astro, which is the first smartphone in the U.S. to be powered by MediaTek’s LTE processor. (more…)

MediaTek named top 10 semiconductor firms of 2014

According to research and analysis firm IHS, the global semiconductor industry registered revenue of US$354.5 billion in 2014, up 9.2 percent from a year earlier and the largest growth rate since 2010. Taiwanese chip designer MediaTek Inc., benefitted from the acquisition of MStar, rose five notches to No. 10 with sales of US$7.02 billion, up 53.1 percent. (more…)

MediaTek and AMD rumored to partner up

It was rumored in March this year that Taiwanese chip designer MediaTek Inc. and U.S. semiconductor firm Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) might form a partnership, but the information was dismissed by the companies. However, tech site Gizchina recently cited GFXBench results and alleged that MediaTek’s upcoming MT8163 chip might have used a GPU developed by AMD. (more…)

European brokerage downgrades MediaTek

A European brokerage, which cannot be named due to restrictions by Taiwan’s financial regulator, has downgraded its rating for MediaTek Inc. from “outperform” to “neutral” because of intense competition the Taiwanese chipmaker faces in the 3G chip segment and its weak 4G LTE product portfolio, Taiwan’s Central News Agency (CNA) reported. Why are MediaTek and AMD suddenly working together?

According to a recent report, AMD may be teaming up with MediaTek to bring its Radeon graphics solution to tablets and smartphones. If true, AMD would be able to tap new markets for its hardware and rectify what many analysts believe was a major mistake: selling its Imageon division to Qualcomm. Qualcomm later took the Imageon line and rebranded it as Adreno. (more…)

MediaTek sales fall to lowest level in 23 months

MediaTek looking to increase presence in autochip industry in 2H 2015

Taiwan-based IC designer MediaTek is looking to release advanced 4G chipsets for automobile applications in the second half of 2015, according to a report from the Commercial Times. An executive from the company who attended this year’s Mobile World Conference said this would help the company establish a major presence in the automobile industry. The executive expects its automobile chip developments to have significant impact on its earnings by the year 2020, the report said. (more…)
