Taiwanese Electronics Brands Aggressively Promote HDR as This Feature Likely to Become Must-Have for High-End Monitors in the Future, TrendForce Reports

Computer monitors and notebooks featuring HDR (high dynamic range) have been a highlight in this year’s major consumer electronics tradeshows from CES to Computex. According to WitsView, a division of TrendForce, HDR as a feature is now spreading into the PC market following its widespread adoption in the TV market last year. Demand growth of HDR-capable monitors for gaming is especially robust, and correspondingly Taiwan-based electronics brands are actively developing this market segment. The market for HDR-capable monitors are expected to expand rapidly once major vendors in IT industries have established a separate HDR standard specifically for their products. (more…)

WitsView, a division of TrendForce, reports that quotes for medium-size LCD TV panels (the 40- to 43-inch bracket) are weakening, dropping by US$1 on average this May compared with the prior month. The LCD TV panel market has been a seller’s market for almost a year and prices have consistently gone up. 4K Penetration Surpassed 30% for First Time in 1Q17 LCD TV Panel Shipments, Says TrendForce

WitsView, a division of TrendForce, reports LCD TV panel shipments for this first quarter totaled 60.16 million units, representing a drop of 10.7% compared with the prior quarter but also a year-on-year increase of 0.4%. Looking at major trends in the TV panel market, the growing demand for 4K resolution is accompanying the steady increase in the average panel size. Despite seasonal headwinds, first-quarter shipments of UHD (4K resolution) TV panels went up 0.5% sequentially to reach 20 million units for the first time ever and accounted for 33.3% of the total TV panel shipments. Strong Demand for Larger Sizes Will Expand This Year’s TV Panel Shipment Area by 7.3%, Says TrendForce

WitsView, a division of the market intelligence firm TrendForce, estimates that worldwide shipments of LCD TV panels for 2017 will total 255.6 million units, down 1.8% in unit volume from 2016. This year’s increase in the average size of TV panels, however, will lead to an annual growth of 7.3% in total shipment area. (more…)

TrendForce’s TV Panel Shipments Ranking for 2016 Shows LGD Retained First Place While BOE Displaced Innolux to Take Third

Global shipments of LCD TV panels for 2016 fell 3.5% from the prior year to around 260.4 million units, according to the latest report by WitsView, a division of TrendForce. Major panel makers expanded their Gen-8.5 production capacity during 2016 in response to the rising demand for larger TV panels. The increased production in the large-size segments helped consume the overall panel capacity and increased the average size of TV panels by 2.2 inches to 43.6 inches. Shipments of TV panels by area therefore actually increased by 6.5% annually. WitsView expects the average size of TV panels to increase again in 2017. (more…)

As more advanced LCD panel fabs (Gen-8 and above) are being built in China and begin operation, local suppliers of materials and components such as glass substrates and polarizers are gearing up to fulfill their demand.
